Latvian i-Society Technology Exhibition

LatSTE idea

It has come to Latvia across the Atlantic Ocean - it was brought by a patron of Latvian schools, a patriot of Latvia a Latvian from the USA Mr.Charles Ivars Kalme. Being a specialist of IT-a programmer in his youth and later-a professor of Mathematics at Harward University, Mr.Kalme understood the situation in Latvia and the importance of IT for the society in the future. Mr.Kalme wished to introduce high level IT in Latvia schools, on the basis of a course of Applied Computer Sciences, not excluding other developments of IT. Within the project “ Cerība” (Hope) a co-operation was started with several Latvian schools – Ogre Town Gymnasium, Smiltene Gymnasium and Auce Secondary School.

During the Baltic IT exposition of year 1997 there were talks about usefulness of LatSTE and ways of possibilities to organize it. Since at that time schools were poorly supplied with computers, programmes and study resources, the first wish was to use LatSTE so that the schools could find out about their situation, wishes and possibilities in introducing IT. The organizers of LatSTE (C.I.Kalme, T.Bērcis, A.Cunska, F.Sarcevičs) had the idea to organize Exposition of Technologies of all Latvian Schools, and gradually it became possible, because in June, the same year, 1997, during a meeting in the PC Center of Ogre Gymnasium, there was made a decision to organize expositions in the following sequence - in 1998 - at Ogre Gymnasium, in 1999 - at Smiltene Gymnasium, but in 2000 - at Auce Secondary School. The sequence was not chosen at random -the modern IT were first introduced at Ogre Gymnasium, then at Smiltene Gymnasium and later at Auce Secondary School. All the three schools are Participans of the International Programme I*EARN.

LatSTE aim

The original aim of the Exposition-was to organize an event for Latvian school Computer Science specialists where they could learn about the latest developments in the school IT, share their experiences, find out about possibilities to organize clasrooms for Computer studies at school with limited financial resources. It was clear that in the given situation it is impossible to organize the Exposition without a support of Latvia IT companies and without participation of various IT specialists. It was also clear that it will be difficult not to be supported by other I*EARN schools, therefore it was decided to invite them to actively support LatSTE, to spread information about it.
